Anton Kuerti
"Created in 1986 by the late - and unforgettable - Krstine Bogyo, Mooredale Concerts has become one of the most exciting and successful musical enterprises in Toronto. Designed to inspire and entertain the whole family, great classical music performances feature top professionals as well as brilliant young artists.
About 20 concerts of great variety are presented each year at which the public can enjoy instrumental soloists, chamber music, chamber orchestra, full symphonic youth orchestra concerts, vocal soloists, and a series designed especially for young children, "Music and Truffles".
Mooredale Concerts bring to audiences well known works as well as neglected ones, and each concert is full of variety in itself. A typical concert could include a short solo appearance by a rising young star, a string trio and a piano quintet. An added plus at most events is the commentary about the music and the composers, helping to enhance audience appreciation. Some of the young stars presented long before they became widely known include Isabel Bayrakdarian Russell Braun, Measha Brueggergosman, Stewart Goodyear and Erika Raum.
The regular concert series and "Music and Truffles" take place Sunday afternoons at Walter Hall, University of Toronto, and most have an additional performance the previous evening at the Willowdale United Church. The Youth Orchestras perform a series of three Sunday afternoon concerts at the Rosedale Heights School auditorium.
The Mooredale Youth Orchestra program every year gives more than 100 gifted young musicians aged 6-20 (divided into three levels of age and proficiency) the chance to work together under the guidance of outstanding conductors and coaches, including many members of the Toronto Symphony. They prepare three concerts a year in which they explore the symphonic repertoire ranging from short baroque trio sonatas for the Junior Orchestra to complete Beethoven Symphonies for the Youth Orchestra. These orchestras are not necessarily for those destined for a professional career in music, although many do take that path. They try to provide a non-competitive and enjoyable social and educational opportunity for young people, who are often isolated in their schools by their interest and proficiency in classical music, to learn to work together with their peers and be thrilled by the masterpieces they perform.
Mooredale Concerts provides an outstanding cultural service to Toronto's music community, and has established a splendid reputation for high quality at rock bottom prices. A Kristine Bogyo Memorial Fund has been established to sustain Mooredale Conceerts, and tax-creditable contributions of any amount are welcome."
