FAQs: Pool Building Renovation
Impact on Operations of Mooredale
What is happening to the playground?
The northwest corner of the playground will be closed off for construction. The existing mulberry tree will be removed to make way for the addition. There will be construction fencing installed to section off the construction area. The remaining spaces in the playground will continue to be available: concrete sidewalk/cycle path, toy shed, climber, shade structure, and entire hillside along the eastern half of the playground.
When will this take place?
We will begin some site work starting August 23rd in preparation for the construction phase, which is currently scheduled to start in mid-September. Construction can only begin when the City has reviewed the final working drawings and has issued a building permit.
The mulberry tree beside the women’s change room will be removed and two replacement trees will be planted later in the fall
We are installing new sod on the eastern hillside, so it will provide an attractive play space for the children by the time that the regular school year begins on September 8th
We are moving one of the playground gates to provide better access from the coach house for the future
We will remove the part of the irrigation system that is currently watering the grass in the NW quadrant of the playground, to be re-used on our site after the construction period is over.
How long will the construction phase take?
The architect and construction company have said that the building would be ready for Mooredale use by February 2010. We are hoping this is correct but we will plan for a March Break occupancy, which would be less disruptive for our program and preschool participants.
Where will Coach House Programs take place, during construction?
The programs that are scheduled to take place in the Studio, will remain in the Studio. However, the entrance to the studio will be through the green Preschool door and through the small room (former Sport and Program Office), on the left wall as soon as you enter the green Preschool door.
Where will parents wait, while their children are in programs in the Studio?
We will move some benches along the exterior walls, for parents and caregivers to use. We also have space reserved for parents waiting in the Main House, in Room 2 on the first floor, and in Room 6, on the second floor.
What impact will this have on my child who is enrolled in Preschool?
If your child’s classroom is in the Main House, there will be no impact. You will continue to drop off and pick up your child at your classroom or in the playground, as directed by your child’s teacher.
If your child’s classroom is in the Coach House, you will travel down a specially made temporary walkway, at the edge of the Coach House lawn, to enter the regular Preschool entrance door (green door). You will go to your normal classroom cubby area to drop off your child. At pick-up, you will go to your normal pick up area, as directed by your child’s teacher.
During the construction phase, the only entrance to the playground will be on the south (Main House) gate. The teachers will escort the children along the sidewalk to the playground and back again after their scheduled outdoor play time.
The full day children will continue to have scheduled time in the Studio, as they have had in the past. They will continue to access the studio from the preschool hallway.
Once the construction is complete, the children will take advantage of the shade provided by the new roof line, creating the look of a porch overhang on the south and south-east corner of the addition.
Why is this project needed?
Over the past decade, Mooredale invested in a complete renovation and expansion of the Coach House building, to create better space for both the Preschool and Program users. During this process, the room that had been designated as a pool office, was eliminated. Due to budget constraints at that time, we were unable to expand the project to provide a permanent space for the Pool Staff.
Mooredale’s next major capital project was to completely renovate the playground space, to meet current safety and program needs for the preschool.
We are fortunate that Mooredale is now able to proceed with a project to create a space that will provide a new change room facility for the women, a nicely refurbished space for the men and a well-designed, separate space for the pool office and pool staff. We are happy that the design will allow staff to observe the pool deck and also provide for fast and direct access to the deck in the event of an emergency.
