President’s
Message: Turf Field Update to Mooredale
Members
July 23, 2010
I am
pleased to share the news that on Thursday July
22, Mooredale signed an agreement with the
Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB)
to move ahead with the design phase of an
artificial turf mini-field at OLPH School. The
agreement sets out Mooredale’s commitment to
fund the design of 40x60 yard field in
anticipation of a further commitment to fund
construction of the field later in 2010 (budget
$250,000) in exchange for a ten-year permit for
use of the facility for soccer (and other field
sports) after school hours and on weekend days,
from spring through the fall. In addition, it
has been agreed that the community will have
access to the new turf field for a portion of
Mooredale’s permitted hours while continuing to
enjoy field access outside of school- and
Mooredale permitted-hours all year round. The
agreement also sets out important stewardship
commitments by Mooredale relating to ongoing use
of the field including litter cleanup, parking
and field maintenance.
Mooredale has pursued the OLPH turf mini-field
opportunity primarily on behalf of the Soccer
Club’s (MSC) growing Rep and Select youth soccer
program. This higher level program is an
outgrowth of and distinct from MSC’s hugely
popular House League soccer program, which will
continue to use Rosedale Park for younger age
groups and Riverdale Park for older age groups.
MSC struck a Turf Committee in early 2010 to
examine long term field partnership
opportunities for Rep/Select soccer in light of
the extreme supply/demand imbalance for outdoor
field space in the City of Toronto. The OLPH
agreement follows precedent examples of
Mooredale’s creative use of neighbourhood school
facilities for its youth programs, although this
will be the first involving such a major
commitment of funds to secure shared use of a
school facility on a long-term basis. The Turf
Committee will continue to examine other field
partnership opportunities in furtherance of
Mooredale’s field requirements.
Mooredale puts its greatest effort into serving
the kids of our community. In the OLPH project,
this aligns us ideally with the aspirations of a
local school and the goals of the TCDSB, and we
are highly confident that the improved public
facilities will bring much enjoyment to the
neighbourhood-at-large.
